A Feasibility Analysis of Chinese Education in Are Our Kids Tough Enough? Chinese School from Cross- Cultural Perspective
Abstract
Are Our Kids Tough Enough? Chinese School is a series of documentaries filmed by BBC which aimed at discussing the different educational mode between China and Britain. Bohunt provides education in the form of compulsory secondary education, which is equivalent to junior high school education in China. In the ways of content and form, Chinese teachers carry out Chinese-style junior high school education into “Chinese School”. Therefore, this paper defines "Chinese education" as junior high school education. From the perspective of cross-culture, this paper analyzes the feasibility of Chinese education in British schools.
This paper is divided into four parts. The first part briefly introduces the background of the documentary. The second part gives a basic overview of the current situation of British junior secondary education. The third part gives a basic overview of junior high school education in China. The fourth part analyzes several prominent phenomena in the documentary.
Through understanding the background of the documentary and the important policies and characteristics of British junior high school education and Chinese junior high school education, this paper analyzes the results of "Chinese education" in the documentary with the concrete contents of the documentary. It is difficult for Chinese model of junior high school education to adapt in Britain because of the objective differences between China and Britain in cultural values and social environment, and of the fundamental differences of the policies of senior high school entrance examination in those two countries .
