The Relation between Language and Culture: A case study of Internet Chinese and English Words

摘要

随着互联网和科技的发展，网络用语作为一种新的语言形式应运而生。本研究以网络用语为研究对象，旨在发现语言与文化的关系，并帮助我们从动态的角度理解这一关系。本文主要采用文献研究法和描述性研究法。此外，本文的目的是从网络英汉词汇的角度来揭示语言与文化的关系，本文所使用的理论有语言文化研究、社会语言学和萨皮尔·沃尔夫假说。最后，本文的结论是，语言与文化之间有着密切的关系。网络用语是一个民族信仰、文化、社会心理、社会热点、休闲娱乐的反映。同时，学习一门语言对我们学习一门语言的文化也有着重要的意义。

Abstract

With the development of Internet and technology, Internet words as a new form of language comes into being. This study concentrates on Internet words under the aim of discovering the relationship between language and culture as well as helps us understand this relationship in a dynamic point of view. The main methods used in this paper including literature research method and descriptive method. Furthermore, the aim of this paper is discover the relationship between language and culture in the perspective of Internet English and Chinese words and the theories used in this paper are linguistic-cultural study, sociolinguistics and Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. Finally, the conclusion of this thesis is that language and culture has a close relationship with each other. Internet words is a reflection of a nation’s faith, a nation’s culture contact, a nation’s social culture psychology, a nation’s hot spots of society and a nation’s leisure and entertainment. In the meanwhile, it has great significance for us to learn culture of a language when we learn a language.
