Analysis of the Lost Generation in Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms

摘要

欧内斯特•米勒尔•海明威（1899—1961）被认为是二十世纪最著名的小说家之一，是美国“迷惘的一代”的代表作家。由于其亲身的参战经历，他的多部小说都描写了战争对人们带来的巨大的身心伤害。作为现代文学的经典名著，《永别了，武器》以战争和爱情为主线，主要分析了第一次世界大战期间，主人公弗雷德里克·亨利对战争从满腔热情到失望、深恶痛绝，以及他对爱情从游戏人生到真挚、负责的变化情况，进而阐述了战争的残酷性，表达了反战倾向，更重要的是揭示了人生的悲剧和徒劳，展现了“迷惘的一代”对于未来的悲观和绝望情绪。

Abstract

Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961) is considered one of the most distinguished novelists of the twentieth century and the representative writer of the Lost Generation in America. Due to his first-hand experience of the war, many novels of Hemingway have described the enormous physical and psychological harm that wars bring to people. As a classic of the modern literature, A Farewell to Arms uses war and love as its two main lines. This work primarily analyzes the protagonist Frederic Henry’s changes of attitude towards war and love—from enthusiasm to detestation, and from irresponsibility to sincerity respectively. It elaborates the brutality of the World War I and expresses the author’s anti-war tendencies. More importantly, it reveals the tragedy and futility of life and shows the pessimism and despair of the Lost Generation for the future.
