摘  要

在交际的过程中，总是有些让人尴尬、使人不快、甚至造成他人恐慌的词语或者表达。若我们直接表达其意思，既达不到预期的交际效果，又会给人留下不好的印象，所以委婉语产生了，展示其语言所在国人民的文化风貌、思维模式、价值观等。根据所搜集的期刊文献资料，本文借助语用学的相关知识研究其在语用方面的功能和基本的翻译策略，先从委婉语的定义出发，着重分析了委婉语的语用功能，引用实例分析英语委婉语在语用功能方面体现的各种形式，以便了解和掌握英语委婉语语用功能的重要性，使英语学习者能正确运用委婉语，然后再对英语委婉语的翻译策略做初步探讨, 以期达到在实际翻译工作中加强对委婉语的理解和交流之目的，促进跨文化交际的有效性。

Abstract

In the process of communication, there are some embarrassing, unpleasant, and even panic words or expressions. If we directly express its meaning, we will not only fail to achieve the communicative effects, but also will give others a bad impression. Euphemisms generated, showing others the cultural outlook, the mode of thinking, the values and so on. According to the journal and literature data collected, the paper uses the learned knowledge of pragmatics functions and basic translation strategies in order to understand and master the importance of English euphemism functions. It starts with the definition of euphemism, citing examples to analyze English euphemisms in pragmatic functions embodied in various forms, so that English learners can correctly use the euphemism. Then the initial exploration to the translation strategies of English euphemism can be done, to achieve the purpose of strengthening the understanding and communication of euphemism in actual translation, and to promote the effectiveness of cross-cultural communication.

1 Introduction
This paper studies the pragmatic functions and translation strategies of English euphemism. Man is a social animal, and human’s sociality is reflected in the interplay and interaction between people. Therefore, the words and deeds and behavior of the people should not only socially accepted standards as scale, but also be restraints by the relevant individuals in the society. Verbal communication is one of the most important behaviors of human beings.
Verbal communication involves both communicative sides and verbal expression conveys information to the information receiver. Therefore, the words and deeds should not only meet the requirements of the society, but also take care of the psychology of the information receiver. Verbal expression involves the motivation of expression, the expression of the purpose, the effect of expression and so on. To achieve their goals, and achieve the expected results, it is necessary to use certain expression strategies. Euphemism is a way for the information organizer to avoid direct language while choosing language in order to express the main context constraints and take care of the receiver’s psychological needs at the same time. Choice itself means the attitude of the information organizers, and is the organizer’s attitude’s metaphorization. Once the information organizer has made sure the information receiver, in order to meet the psychological needs of the society and individuals, the organizer has to deviate from the direct way of expression, abandoning direct language, allowing information receiver to understand the world of euphemism.
