1 Introduction
Joan Haste by English writer H. Rider Haggard is one of these normal romantic novels among the western literatures in the late 19th and early 20th century. It may be little known and does not belong to the “Great Works” catalogue. But its two different Chinese versions were a real sensation to China at the time. Since a long period researchers keep interests in these two versions, even nowadays. Firstly, the differences between the eastern and western culture are the main cause to this phenomenon. Secondly, the rhetorical devices, the application of different translation strategies and personal style are also other important factors which have an effect on the success of these two translation works.
