Abstract:
Translating is not only bilingual but also bicultural. The cultural differences lead to different cognitions of a language. A good translator is expected to be familiar with both the source language-culture and the target language-culture. As we all know, the Chinese loong has been usually translated into the western dragon. But in fact, they do not have the same cultural image. The ignorance of the differences between the auspicious Chinese loong and the sinister western dragon results in some misunderstandings among the target readers, which we should try to avoid as much as possible.
This paper adopts the theory of domestication and foreignization to analyze the diversities between the Chinese loong and the western dragon. It begins with the debate of loong. And then it illustrates the reasons of different cultures, involving the cultures of animals. According to the idea of domestication and foreignization, there are several translated versions of loong in modern times. By comparing them, the writer puts forward a reasonable version to make the world better acquaint with the Chinese culture.
Key words: loong; translation; domestication; foreignization; culture

1 Introduction
In 2006, Professor Wu Youfu, from Shanghai International Studies University, said that the dragon could no longer be the image of China. In 2008, China held the Olympic Games, this was a proud thing. But it gave rise to the attention to the Olympic Mascot. It was reported that Loong could not be the Olympic Mascot. All of these may attribute to differences of cultures between the east and the west. In recent years, the translation of loong has increasingly attracted attention, with the rise of China’s international status. Even though the Chinese loong has a rich and varied cultural color, it is still translated into dragon as a common practice. However, dragon has a negative impact in the west. Therefore, westerners usually confuse the benevolent Chinese loong with the aggressive Western dragon. As a result, there are some unnecessary misconceptions and misunderstandings when the two cultures come across with each other.
