Abstract
With the fast phase of globalization and rapid development of world economy, the number of cross-country cross-language activities has been increased significantly. Translation has been served as a bridge for people from different countries with different background to effectively and efficiently communicate with each other. The similarities between different languages and cultures enable us to translate from one language into another while the difference between them makes it a difficult task. Different translation strategies have been proposed and studied by linguists and translators, among which, zero-translation is a fairly new concept which is used to overcome partial untranslatability. In this thesis, we study the interrelations among language, culture, and translation, the theories of untranslatability and translatability, the definitions and historical development of zero-translation, as well as real world applications of zero-translation. In a word, zero-translation plays an important role in cross-culture communications for its simplicity and expediency, and should be properly used.
Keywords: zero-translation; cross-cultural communication; untranslatability; translatability
Chapter 1. Introduction
With the trend of globalization and ever increasing number of cross-country activities in trade, manufacturing, investment, cultural exchange, leisure travel, we no longer live in an isolated island separated by borders, but live in a much bigger international society with people from all over the world. Information technology and other technical advancements in modern transportation systems have brought us into an era of globalization. We can now sit at home watching the latest stories happening at any corner of the world, or attend a breakfast meeting in London in the morning and a social banquet in Hong Kong in the evening. The rapid development of world economy and globalization will undoubtedly increase the cross-country cross-culture interactions between persons, companies, organizations, or nations with different histories or backgrounds.
