Abstract and Key Words
Abstract: As a public and popular form of mass media, films play an important role in cross-cultural communication. With information about the film itself and the foreign culture, subtitles are vital for the audience’s entertainment and furthermore for the success of cultural communication. Therefore, subtitle translation gradually shows up as an important and indispensible social activity. However, due to linguistic and cultural differences, subtitle translation is usually regarded as an interesting but demanding task. The way how to deal with all these factors involved depends on the purpose of the task, for each film is generally introduced to another foreign country with a certain aim, such as entertainment, education or business profits and so on. This paper aims to study the subtitle translation of The Big Bang Theory from the perspective of the skopos theory. On the basis of typical features of this TV series and the general principles of skopos theory, some translation strategies, such as foreignization and domestication are summarized to help readers have a better understanding of subtitle translation and promote the communication between different cultures.

摘要:影视剧作为一种具有大众性、广泛性和传播性的文化形态,在跨文化交际中起着至关重要的作用。随着经济和文化全球化趋势的不断发展,大量的影视剧涌入中国市场。其中,影视字幕至关重要,它有助于观众理解影片内容,了解外国文化,亦能促进文化交流。于是,字幕翻译逐渐成为一项重要并且必不可少的社会活动。然而,由于语言和文化上的差异,字幕翻译通常是一项有趣却艰辛的任务。而如何处理好这些影响因素取决于翻译任务的目的,因为每一部外国电影的引进都有特定的目的,譬如娱乐、教育或者商业目的等。本文将从目的论的角度出发对美剧《生活大爆炸》的字幕翻译进行研究,基于该剧典型特点及目的论基本原则,本文总结了异化和归化这样切实可行的翻译方法,以便读者对字幕翻译有一个更好的认识,并且更好地促进不同文化的传播和交流。

1. Introduction
With the development of economy, technology and transportation, people’s living standard has been highly improved. Especially after the carrying out of reform and opening-up policies, increasing attention has been paid to cultural exchanges with foreign countries, which makes foreign films more popular among Chinese audience. As a popular style of entertainment, foreign films not only can bring a lot of fun, but also introduces foreign cultures, which is of great significance in the promotion of cultural exchanges in the era of globalization.
However, Zhu Xiaojing says the fact is that not all Chinese audience can understand original foreign films without the help of translation. Thus, subtitle translation is essential and even vital for the success of a foreign film on Chinese market.
