1. Introduction
To begin with, the general description of studies on translator’s subjectivity and Professor Xu Yuanchong will be covered, and then the research methodology and objectives are to be discussed. In the end, the overall structure of this thesis will be exhibited.
For quite a long time, translator has been described as a servant, or matchmaker, whose role is humble and invisible. Since the “cultural turn” in 1970s, the status of translator has been greatly improved. Accordingly, discussions and studies on translator’s subjectivity are stirring up waves all over the world. However, present studies mainly focus on the theoretical analysis while micro studies on a specific translator receive relatively less attention, which will surely restrict the development of the theory of translator’s subjectivity.
As a famous translator, Professor Xu is expert in translating Chinese poetry into English and French verses. Devoted to translation for over 60 years, he has published both at home and abroad more than 60 books, among which most are translation works, particularly those of Chinese ancient poetry from Chinese to English. Translator’s subjectivity is everywhere to be seen in Professor Xu’s poetry translation. Therefore, many theories and example translations by Professor Xu are quoted in the thesis to prove that the translator plays a dynamic role in translation on the premise of certain constraints in order to attain the purpose of translation, and also to demonstrate how the translator should give a full play to his/her subjective initiative so as to deal with these constraints. What’s more, this thesis also calls for a correct attitude towards translator’s subjectivity by examining the successful example of Xu’s poetry translation.
