Abstract and Key Words

Abstract: This paper is aimed to summarize fuzzy numerals in Chinese poetry and provides an analysis of translation strategies and practices of them. Exact and fuzzy expressions are two basic ways employed in different situations for the purpose of imagery reconstruction. As for the translations of fuzzy expressions, it includes free translation, lexicon conversion and exaggeration to express the original images accurately and to emphasize the key messages. This study provides plenty of case analysis, demonstrating the necessity of the comprehension of the source before translation.

摘要：本文旨在总结归纳汉语古诗中的模糊数词，并分析其翻译策略和具体实践。为实现意象重构，精确表达和模糊表达这两种基本翻译方法，根据语境不同得以应用。而具体实践中模糊表达又包含数词的意译、词类转换和夸张翻译，从而准确表达原诗意象，突出原诗关键信息。本文提供丰富例句，展现译者理解原诗该前提在翻译中的必要性。

1.  Introduction
In 1965, American scientists published a thesis called “Fuzzy sets”, putting forward the famous idea of Fuzzy theory. This theory plays an important role in studying the meaning of fuzzy language. Wu Tieping(2005) points out that there is no explicit extension in the concept of many words, which is the so-called fuzzy concept. In another paper he adds that the language which expresses fuzzy concepts is fuzzy language. Fuzziness is different from ambiguity or vagueness, and it means that the words have semantic extension. Liu Biqing(2001) points out that the fuzziness of language refers to the meaning itself has unclear boundaries, and we cannot use logical classification to delimit the boundary, neither can we use the context of the simultaneous relationship to restrict or exclude this uncertainty. So, fuzzy language does not mean to be confused or equivocal. It is using the semantic fuzziness of language to reflect the fuzzy concept of life accurately.
The fuzzy beauty of Chinese poetry lies in its language. “Fuzzy is one of the basic characteristics of language and it is a common phenomenon.”Fuzzy theory opens a new way in the study of numerals in language. Numerals are used to express number or calculated number of characters and symbols. It seems to be the representative of accuracy. But during the using process of Chinese and English numerals, in addition to exact expressive function, there still exists the function of fuzzy expression. Fuzzy theory as a kind of unique language phenomenon, its semantic contents and pragmatic value should not be neglected. English language culture master Wang Zuoliang once points out that though the translator is processing a word, he is facing with two kinds of culture.
