1. Introduction
This thesis is composed of five parts with the first one giving a brief explanation of the choice of the research topic and the outline of the whole thesis. Part two offers a literature review that provides the theoretical support in this thesis. And in this part, the author also introduces the basic details of basic knowledge, like definitions, features and resources. Part three reports and introduces the difficulties in the translation. The author points out the importance of the context in the translation work. For translators, context is always on top of the most concerned issues. Only translation versions which fit in the context can be called the appropriate and good ones. Then comes part four that presents three different techniques in dealing with the translation of English and Chinese idioms, which are literal translation, liberal translation and borrowed method from synonymy idioms. And there are also differences in every technique. In this part, examples are also illustrated for better understanding. In the author’s point, literal translation and liberal translation are two related concepts with their respective limitations. During the translation process, there is no absolute literal translation and liberal translation. It is absurd to over emphasize either of them. Hence translators have to be flexible according to different situations.
