Abstract and Key Words

Abstract: This paper is a study of choices of E-C proverbs translation methods. The purpose of which is to analyze methods of E-C proverbs translation, to achieve profound understanding of E-C proverbs, and to bring convenience in E-C proverbs translating and get better translation version. The process is analyzed by means of stating the cultural factors in E-C proverbs, comparing the different cultural elements between them, and indicating the choices between domestication and alienation in translating. It is found that both domestication and alienation count, and their combination is needed. The result demonstrated that the specific methods of translating E-C proverbs lie in the cultural backgrounds.

摘要:本文是一篇关于英汉谚语互译中翻译策略选取的研究，旨在分析英汉谚语互译的翻译策略，加深对英汉谚语的了解，以便更好地互译英汉谚语，为使用英汉谚语带来方便。文章通过列举影响谚语的文化因素，以及对比英汉谚语的文化差异，指出两种谚语互译中的归化和异化的选择。研究发现在翻译两种谚语时，归化与异化平分秋色，有时还需两者结合。文章认为，要根据文化背景的不同来选择具体的翻译方法。

1. Introduction
1.1 Comments on Current Studies on Proverbs
With the further communication between English and Chinese, to translate the proverbs is increasingly necessary. American proverbs researcher Wolfgang Mieder made full and accurate studies on proverbs. In his book Proverbs: A Handbook he compared different definitions given by predecessors and made detailed summaries, then he listed his definition about proverbs and he did a good job in classifying English proverbs. It can be said that he is one of the most important researchers in studying proverbs. His studies aroused others’ interests on proverbs.
Domestically speaking, the researches on proverbs were sluggish. Zeng Zili proposed that the positive factors of cultural values should be distinguished from the negative ones in his book A General Survey of English Proverbs. The following years in 1990s were prosperous periods for proverbs studies, and the research angles varied. Studies on English Proverbs took summaries and researches about English proverbs from the points of grammar, rhetorical devices and translation. What’s more, Chinese English Proverbs Dictionary, written by Guo Jianming and Huang Lin, set up the fields of proverbs dictionary. During this period, several dissertations were published by some English scholars.
