Abstract

With the rapid development of Internet, Chinese netizens now can follow the latest Hollywood movies as well as the updated American TV series even simultaneously as their American counterparts do. American TV series, therefore, become popular in China. At the same time, the importance of subtitle translation is obvious. In order to fulfill the appetite of Chinese netizens, some volunteer groups translate the subtitles and upload them to the Internet for others to use. Different from traditional dubbing of introduced movies, subtitles made by those "subtitle groups" have distinct features. Based on relevance theory, this thesis takes the sitcom The Big Bang Theory for an example, tries to research and analyze the subtitle translation of online American TV series. The research finds that many popular Internet languages are used to translate subtitles of online American TV series. Besides, domesticating method and explicative subtitles are both adopted as translating strategies.

摘  要

随着网络的不断发展，如今的中国网民几乎可以与美国人同步欣赏到大片或者不断更新的电视剧，美剧也在国内掀起热潮，与此同时，字幕翻译就显得更为重要。为了赶上更新速度，在网络上涌现出许多“字幕组”，他们高速高效高质量的字幕也得到了广大网民的喜爱。有别于传统国外影视作品的引进译制，网络“字幕组”翻译的美剧字幕呈现出其鲜明的特点。针对这一现象，本文试图从关联理论入手，以美剧《生活大爆炸》为案例，探讨分析网络字幕组的美剧字幕翻译。分析发现，网络美剧字幕的翻译中出现了不少当下流行的网络语言和港台方言，同时归化译法以及译者对剧情的点评解释也频繁被采用。

1. Introduction
With the rapid development of Internet, Chinese netizens now can follow the latest Hollywood Films and the updated American TV series even simultaneously as their American counterparts do. Watching American TV series, therefore, has become quite popular with Chinese young generation who can access Internet conveniently. For some of them, it has even become an indispensable part of their life. Most of the latest TV series and movies are not like those official translated versions which will be shown in cinema or on television. Instead, it is only facilitated with bilingual subtitles, English and Chinese. The Chinese subtitles are usually translated by some volunteer translators of “subtitle groups”. These volunteers are supposed to do the translation as soon as possible so the fans can enjoy it immediately. Recently, with the growing attention attached on those popular American TV series, some famous “subtitle groups” such as YYeTs, S-Files, PLX have won their own fans. Their subtitles are so welcome that fans often post the screen shots online to share and discuss.
