Abstract
Reduplicated word is quite common in Chinese literary works. Its using has long been a traditional phenomenon in Chinese literary history, especially in the field of poetry. Besides, it's also widely used in various kinds of literary genres and in our daily lives. Chinese words, such as the nouns, numerals, quantifiers, adjectives, adverbs, onomatopoeic words and so on, all can be organized in the form of reduplicated words. By comparison, English is a polysyllabic language with irregular syllables; therefore, reduplicated word is less common to see in English literary works. The translation of reduplicated words has long been an important part in translation of Chinese literary works. However, due to the different ways of expressions of the two languages, as well as different cultural backgrounds and language structures, Chinese reduplicated words, especially those in poetry, is not easy to be equivalently translated. In this thesis, the author will try to figure out how to translate Chinese reduplicated words in a more sufficient way, in order to make the translation reach the same or similar effect as the original text. Different translating methods will be discussed and compared in this paper, and by analyzing such translation methods as literal translation, free translation, imitative translation, imagery translation and so on , the author will try to summarize which method can be used on different occasions.
Keywords: reduplicated word; translation; equivalence
Chapter 1 Introduction
Reduplicated word is generally a phrase formed by two same words or characters put together. It's not only cleverly formed, but also rhymingly readable. In Chinese, it is a phrase made up of one or two same Chinese characters. In short, it is a reduplication of words or characters. In Merriam-Webster Dictionary, reduplication is defined as “an often grammatically functional repetition of a radical element or a part of it occurring usually at the beginning of a word and often accompanied by change of the radical vowel.”And in Linguistic Dictionary of English, it says, “Reduplication is a pattern where the double or multiple occurrence of a sound string, syllable, morpheme, or word within a larger syntagmatic unit.”And the two definitions of reduplication are targeting all the reduplicated words of all languages.
