摘 要

当代政治变化风云莫测,社会经济不断发展,科学技术突飞猛进,公共文化丰富多彩,这所有的一切全方位的影响着人们的生活、工作和社会交际,给人们带来了全新的观念和全新的体验。这些影响在语言之中也得以体现,其中最大的表现就是不断出现的新词,例如肯德基的“秒杀门”,由于辣椒的价格上涨而出现的“辣翻天”,因监狱体制不完善而导致罪犯死亡的“躲猫猫”,以及“神马是浮云”等等。这些新词的出现,丰富了语言内容,彰显了语言的时代性。在跨文化交际中准确传达这些新词的真实涵义并保留其原有的社会、经济和文化特性也变得尤为重要。现在,汉语新词的翻译不乏精彩之处,但其中也有一些不足之处。本文以尤金•奈达的功能对等的翻译原则为指导理论,以某些领域的新词作为研究对象,比较某些新词的译文文本,总结归纳出相应的更为有效的翻译方法,从而使译文能有效地、准确地传达汉语新词的内涵。

Abstract

The unpredictable changes in the global politics, gradual development of society and economy, rapidly updated science and technology and colorful public activities all have influenced people’s life, work and their social activities. Brand new ideas and experience brought by those changes in turn to a large extent influence the language used in people’s daily life. One of the great influences is the emergence of Chinese neologisms. Take some new words as an example: the cheating-gate of KFC, “spicy price” because of the rapidly rising price of peppers, “hide-and-seek” due to the uncompleted system of the prison, “everything is nothing” and so on. The neologisms have enriched the language and presented the effectiveness of time. It is becoming especially important to translate Chinese neologisms into English without losing their original social, economic and cultural characteristics. Now many translators have showed great interest in translation of Chinese neologisms and have done much work in this field, but there is still some room to be improved. This thesis will compare different versions of some Chinese neologisms in some areas based on Eugene A.Nida’s Theory of functional equivalence, and then summarize more effective ways to translate Chinese neologisms.

Chapter 1  Introduction
In the ever-changing society, languages as a way to express ideas and to communicate also change with the world. Since China adopted the policy of reform and opening-up in 1978, especially after its entering the WTO, great changes have taken place in all areas like politics, economy, culture, technologies and ideology. All these changes are reflected in everyday language use. As the most active component of a language, vocabulary is very sensitive to the changes of society. According to the statistics by National Association of Language Research, about 7000 new words have been created since 1978. As a result, new coinages can be found here and there.
