Abstract

With the improvements of science and technology, the dissemination of information becomes easier and faster, and languages that reflect social life have been constantly updated. Words, as the most active part of language, spring up like mushrooms in many areas like linguistics, politics, economy, science and technology, cultural entertainments, daily life and so on. These neologisms are full of era features with vivid expression and rich content. Nowadays, China is going global and integrating with the rest of the world, therefore, timely delivering China’s current situation to the world is a significant task of translators. As we all know, dictionary is the indispensible tool for translation, however, the work of compiling dictionaries could never keep up with the latest neologisms. Thus, how to translate Chinese neologisms to English accurately and naturally becomes a huge challenge of translators.

Based on functional equivalence theory, this thesis aims to discuss the application of functional equivalence theory to Chinese neologisms translation by means of theoretical study and case analysis. Firstly this thesis gives a review of functional equivalence theory, and secondly it discusses the classification and features of Chinese neologisms. Then, from the perspective of domestication and foreignization, this thesis explores translation strategies of Chinese neologisms in the light of functional equivalence theory and concludes significance of these strategies in Chinese neologisms translation.

摘        要

随着科技的发展，信息传播愈发简单快捷，反应社会生活的语言也随之不断更新。作为语言中最敏感、最活跃的词汇，更是如雨后春笋般不断涌出。它们涉及语言，政治、经济、科学技术、文化娱乐、日常生活等方方面面。这些新词简单新颖，构词方式独特，形象生动，感情鲜明，内涵丰富，极富时代特色。如今，中国正积极地走向世界，融入世界。因此，及时地将中国的国情与民情传递到国外，让世界了解中国，认识中国是翻译者们的重要任务。翻译离不开字典，但是许多新词都未曾收录进字典，因此如何将汉语新词准确形象地英译是翻译从业者面临的一大难题。
本文以功能对等为理论依据，通过理论研究和案例分析来研究功能对等理论在汉语新词英译中的应用。文章首先阐述了功能对等理论的内容和要求，其次分析了汉语新词的种类及特点，然后从归化和异化两个角度，针对当今流行的汉语新词的英译进行研究和探讨，通过具体的案例，分析功能对等理论在汉语新词英译中的应用。然后从具体案例中总结出符合功能对等理论具体原则的翻译策略，并归纳出该策略在汉语新词英译过程中的指导意义。
