Abstract

Chinese social news provides people with abundant topics to argue and study, however, foreigners often prefer to scan its headline at first to choose what they are interested in. In order to know China better, it would be particularly important to translate its headlines properly. On the basis of summarizing its features and functions and research fruit of overseas and domestic scholars, this thesis aims to probe into the principles and practical strategies of Chinese social news headline translation with scientific methodology. Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis of  collected samples from prominent Chinese news agencies, this thesis proves that literal translation, addition translation, deletion translation and free translation are four basic translation strategies, according to the principles of faithfulness, conciseness and attractiveness. It is hoped that this thesis could give useful suggestions for the translation of Chinese social news headlines and make it possible for foreigners to learn about China in time by reading its English headlines.

摘要

社会新闻为大家提供丰富的讨论、研究题材，读者也通常是在略读其标题后选择自己感兴的社会新闻来阅读。为了让世界更好地认识中国，中文社会新闻标题的翻译愈显重要。本文通过对新闻标题特点与功能的观察，借鉴国内外学者的研究成果，总结概括了社会新闻标题的英译原则与策略，并对搜集到的语料进行定量与定性分析，验证了本文提出的翻译策略的合理性，即在忠实性，简洁性和吸引力三原则指导下使用直译、增译、省译与自由翻译的翻译策略。为中文社会新闻标题的翻译实践提供实用性建议，使读者能通过英文新闻标题迅速有效地了解报道主题。

1. Introduction
    In the era of information, many people are guided by the busy tempo of modern life, meanwhile, they also demands for high quality of life. In order to acquire valuable information from the news effectively, it is no doubt that news headline, the inseparable component of news, serves an important role in attracting readers’ attention, which is also the key point to journalists, who usually pay much attention to the writing of a good headline.
