摘要

本文将简单介绍修辞中的词义修辞格及具体分类，并用具体例子来说明8种主要英文词义修辞格明喻、暗喻、用典、转移修饰语、拟人、夸张、委婉语和双关语, 及其在具体句子或文章中的语言、文化翻译障碍，总结分析了5种常用的翻译方法，并且探讨英语使用词义修辞格的原因及功能，帮助学生解决日常生活、学习和工作中碰到含有英语词义修辞格的句子翻译问题。

Abstract

This paper will give brief introduction to semantic rhetorical device and its classification. In order to help students translate sentences involved in semantic rhetorical devices in study and daily life, this paper uses examples to describe eight main semantic rhetorical devices, including smile, metaphor, allusion, transferred epithet, personification, hyperbole, euphemism and pun. The author concludes the linguistic barriers and cultural barriers in translation. To solve these problems, the author offers five common methods of translation. This paper finds out causes of using semantic rhetorical devices and analyzes functions by using semantic rhetorical devices in English –Chinese translation.

1. Introduction
A figure of speech is the use of a word or a phrase transcending its literal interpretation. It is divided into four categories, that is, semantic rhetorical devices, phonological rhetorical devices and syntactical rhetorical devices. Semantic rhetorical devices are created mainly through semantic association and language changes. They consist mainly of simile, metaphor, allusion, metonymy, transferred epithet, personification, hyperbole, irony, euphemism, pun, oxymoron, zeugma, contrast and so on.
In the early 1990s, more and more researchers admitted the translatability of semantic rhetorical devices, and they began to put their scholarly effort in the study of this theory. At the same time, no one denied that semantic rhetorical devices create translation problems. On the other hand, they may have to make various compensation and adjustment because of the limitation caused by linguistic and cultural differences. On the basis of previous studies, this paper analyzes linguistic barriers and cultural barriers to semantic rhetorical devices translation. The author offers some methods of semantic rhetorical devices translation, in the hope that it will be helpful for the recognition, analysis and translation of semantic rhetorical devices.
