Abstract:

University motto is the soul of campus which can reflect educational philosophy and characteristics. University motto plays an important role in external publicity. Through the analysis of the linguistic features of the university mottos and the contrast of the differences between Chinese and western university mottos, this study makes people know more about university motto which is a unique type of text. In addition, this study aims to the problems and strategies of translating the Chinese university mottos in a bid to make students both at home and abroad understand the culture spirit of universities and educational philosophy as well. This study intends to make people have a good knowledge of the universities, and then further promotes the students to communicate and learn with each other.

校训能够体现学校办学理念和办学特色，是校园文化的精髓，在学校对外宣传中起着十分重要的作用。文章通过对校训语言特点的分析以及对比中西大学校训语言特点的差异，使人们更加了解校训这一较为独特的应用文体。同时，也将对汉语校训的英译进行研究，使得高校的宣传更加深入人心，国内外学子更加了解高校的文化精神和办学理念，从而进一步推动国内外学子们的互相交流与学习。

1. Introduction
University motto is a concentration of educational philosophy and educational goals. It is the essence of campus culture and embodies the spirit and characteristics of the university. It is also the spiritual pillar and the code of conduct for teachers and students. With the deepening of globalization and the rapid development of Chinese economy, the communication among universities at home and abroad is more frequent. As a result, more and more foreign students come to China for studies. At the same time, there is an increase of the external publicity of Chinese universities. To promote university culture and improve the image of the universities, a great many universities translate their mottos into English. They also attach great importance to their own mottos and they want to translate their mottos into accurate and appropriate English. The university mottos are mostly concise with the rich cultural connotations, strong national colors and the rhetorical features. And the university mottos have differences between different languages and cultures. Therefore, it is an important topic how to translate mottos into proper English without breaking aesthetic feeling.
