Abstract:

Domestication and foreignization are the two strategies for translators to deal with the cultural difference in translation. Generally speaking, when selecting a translation strategy, people will consider a lot of elements, subjective or objective ones, such as his or her purposes of translation, cultural attitude, the historical context and so on. For these reasons, it is essential for people to use a historical way to do researches on translation strategies of a target text and to take all objective and subjective elements into consideration.
  This paper aims to study the factors the translation strategies of Gladys Yang and Yang Hsien-yi's version of The Border Town from more than one point of view, like domestication and foreignization, cultural background and so on. Through random sampling of the text and analysis of different cultural elements, this thesis reaches a conclusion that foreignization is an overwhelming priority over domestication in translation of Gladys Yang and Yang Hsien-yi's translation of The Border Town. Different cultural elements are also taken into account during the process of translation. In this thesis, the author tries to explore the factors that the translators apply such translation strategies.

摘  要：

归化与异化是处理翻译中文化差异的两种策略。而在翻译过程中翻译策略的选择，很多因素会被考虑进去，例如：译者本人的翻译目的，文化态度等主观因素，抑或是作者所处的时代背景等客观因素。因此，为了研究一部译作的翻译策略，我们有必要采用历史的方法，这样可以更全面的考虑到其中的主客观因素。
  本文拟从翻译的归化与异化，文化背景等多个角度来研究《边城》英译本的翻译策略且通过简单文本的举例说明，以及从不同的文化差异进行研究，最终得出结论：戴乃迭《边城》英译本里的文字翻译主要采用了以异化为主，归化为辅并结合文化因素的翻译策略。同时本文还尝试探讨了戴乃迭选择这种翻译策略的主要原因。
