Abstract: Interlanguage, which functions as a transition from primary acquisition of language to proficient expression during the process of second language acquisition (SLA), is always regarded as an inevitable problem among language learners. Based on the repetitive evidence of errors in three Chinese into English(C-E) translation tests which include the same contents among a certain group of English majors, this paper aims to analyze lexical errors and find out the fossilized items among them. In this paper, I first present some manifestations of the typically fossilized items collected from the three translation tests, and then make a further study on the causes of fossilization. Some countermeasures are put forward as to how to get rid of fossilization. This paper aims to arouse English language learners’ attention to the phenomenon of interlanguage fossilization since it is crucial, indeed, for learners to detect the fossilized errors and correct them in time. Also, it is of great importance to SLA and teachers’ teaching methodology.

The theory of fossilization based on the concept of “interlanguage”. Interlanguage (IL) first put forward by Larry Selinker in 1972, is used to describe a linguistic system, which is different from both the learners’ first language and the target language. Meanwhile, as a universal phenomenon in interlanguage development and also an obstacle to L2 learners’ improvement, fossilization has attracted prevalent attention among both language researchers and teachers. It is the phenomenon that linguistic items, rules, and subsystems of learners of a particular native language(NL) tend to persist in their interlanguage relative to a particular target language(TL).To be specific, it means that language errors and non-target forms committed by second language learners become fixed. However, it’s rather remarkable that most of the studies only emphasize fossilization that takes place at the level of the linguistic forms, while neglecting that fossilization also happens in practical language use, especially when it comes to C-E translation, which requires people to translate from mother tongue to a foreign language. As a result, I decided to delve into this phenomenon based on an empirical study among English majors.
