Abstract
Recently, many Chinese scholars are doing research on literary translation and have put forward a large amount of translation theories, strategies and techniques. However, the number of works combining these translation theories with translation practice limits and the study on translating dialogues is not comprehensive. Therefore, this thesis is mainly aiming at using these translation theories to guide the translation practice on dialogues in Douglas Dunn's novel Getting Used to It.
The novel Getting Used to It by Douglas Dunn is a typical English short novel which is skilled at using dialogues to reveal the social reality and depict the characters. Although many of Dunn's poems have been translated to a diversity of editions, his novels have never been translated before. This novel Getting Used to It reflects the social reality during the Period of British Disease. By reading this novel, readers can get closer to the people during that time and have a better understanding of the real meaning of life.
This thesis consists of five parts. In the first chapter, a systematic review about the author, the background, and the theme is made. The second chapter conducts a study on the two main translation theories: Qian Zhongshu's translation “sublimation theory" and E.A. Nida's translation “dynamic equivalence theory", with their application in the translation practice. The third chapter gives a certain number of examples with some translation strategies in the hope of exploring the different roles of translation strategies play during the translation practice on dialogues. In the fourth chapter, the author concentrates on the usage of different translation techniques in doing translation practice, and the fifth chapter makes a natural conclusion of with findings and reflections.
