Abstract
With the development of sports career and the increasing international sports exchanges nowadays, sports have become an indispensable part of our daily life, so the translation of sports terms has great practical and theoretical significance in today’ society. It also plays an important role in our study of sports operation and cultural communication.
The following essay is going to give a brief discussion of the translation methods of sports terms based on the Skopos theory. In most of the translation theories, only the Skopos theory pays more attention to the relationship between source text and target text, putting much emphasis on content than form. Chapter One Introduction
1.1Research Background
With the booming development of sports career in and out of our country and the increasing communication of sports in the international world, especially the hold of Olympic Games, World Cup and World Championship, etc, more and more people start to focus on sports. Sports have become one of the most important activities in people's life. It not only benefits their physical health, but also does much good to the society. With the great development of economic growth and standards of people’s life, the spread of sports has become a necessity. Consequently, a better understanding of sports terms is of great significance for everyone as well as a big challenge for translators.
There are varieties of public media concerning sports like magazines, TV, Live Broadcasting and so on, which give a thorough introduction of the development of sports in the world. Under this background, sport English came into being, which greatly bridges the sports career and culture between China and Western countries. When Olympic Games were held in Beijing in 2008, many shows and essays introducing sports showed up in all kinds of media, such as BBC, China Daily, CCTV5, etc, which have made a detailed description of the competitions and sports programs, drawing attention of massive English learners and sports fans. To master sports English well has a realistic meaning to the development of our country’s sports and cross-cultural communication with others in the world.
