Abstract

Essay is a flexible, informal and free writing style, which is free from the limit of time and space and enables the author to express the emotion at ease and unconstraint. Therefore, the essay is whatever the author is. Consequently, essay translation is expected to take both sides into consideration out of the features of essays: ensuring the artistic conception in target language and expressing the original meaning and theme accurately. To fulfill these two functions, there appears a contradiction in the artistic conception and the expression of the original meaning. Only by determining the skopos of the translation of an essay can a translator skillfully solve the contradiction and approach the essay with appropriate strategies. To illustrate the validity and exemplify the applicability of the Skopos theory, the present paper gives an analysis of Zhang Peiji's work of Selected Modern Chinese Essays within the framework of the theory, in hopes of finding some insights into the practice and the theoretical study of essay translation.
The paper consists of four parts. The first part gives a general introduction to the Skopos theory, features of essay, and the contradiction in essay translation. The second part provides information about Zhang Peiji and his work Selected Modern Chinese Essays. The third part offers an analysis of the translation of his work under the guidance of the Skopos theory. At last, a conclusion is drawn from the essay translation.

摘要

散文是一种灵活随便，轻松自如的文体，不受时间，时空的限制。作者可以无拘无束抒发感情，因而文如其人。散文形散神聚的特点使散文翻译时也应考虑到两个方面：既保证文章营造的意境，也要准确传达文章所表达的意思与主题。笔者认为，只有对翻译目的进行准确的界定，译者才能更好的应对这一矛盾，并采取适当的策略和方法进行散文翻译。为了验证目的论在散文翻译中的可行性和适应性，本文运用理论对张培基大师的《英译中国现代散文选（一）》进行了分析，希望能从成功的翻译实践中找到有益的启示。
本文由四大部分构成。第一部分对翻译的目的论进行了简单的介绍，总结了散文写作的基本特征，指出了散文翻译中的矛盾并介绍了目的论在散文翻译中的运用。第二部分介绍了张培基大师以及其代表作《英译中国现代散文选（一）》的基本情况和相关信息。第三部分在目的论的框架内，对《英译中国现代散文选（一）》中的散文翻译进行了详尽的分析。最后进行了简要的总结。
