Abstract:

As an indispensable part of the traditional Chinese culture, numeral-based proverbs and sayings have penetrated into people’s life. These numeral-based proverbs and sayings can well reflect our national cultural features because of their special cultural roots and profound cultures. They are usually concise, vivid and picturesque. Influenced by national psychology, historical backgrounds, customs and religious beliefs and so on, Chinese and English are different but at the same time have the common regulars in such proverbs and sayings. As a result, we can not simply use literal translation or liberal translation. Choices of translation approaches should abide by proper principles, that is to say, use translation approaches flexibly to keep the original features and make the translation versions easy to be accepted after studying the differences between Chinese and English. This thesis will mainly focus on the features and difficulties of translating numeral-based Chinese proverbs and sayings and then discuss the corresponding translation strategies with some particular examples on the basis of analyzing the differences between these two languages. At last, the author hopes that there are more and more scholars applying themselves into this relevant field and presenting more effective methods to make the translation of Chinese numeral-based proverbs and sayings more idiomatic and perfect in the future.

摘要：

数字谚语和习语作为中国传统文化中不可或缺的一部分,已经渗透到了人们的生活中。数字谚语和习语能反映一个民族文化的特征，其具有特别的民族文化根源和深厚的民族文化底蕴，通常简练、生动、形象。由于英汉两种语言受民族心理、历史背景、风俗习惯、宗教信仰等文化差异的影响，虽有共同的规律，但也存在较大的差异。因此，不能为追求某个目标而单纯地直译或意译，而是要通过文化差异的比较并要兼顾读者的理解 、原意的完整表达，灵活地运用各种翻译方法。本文立足英汉两种语言的差异，以几类特别的数字谚语和习语的翻译为例，分析中国数字谚语和习语的翻译难点并找出相应的翻译策略。作者希望有更多的学者能注意到这个领域并且投入到该领域的翻译研究中来，争取提出更多有效方法，把中国特色数字谚语和习语翻译地更加地道，更加完美。

Introduction
As the biggest developing country in the world, there is no doubt that China has played an important role in many aspects after reforming and opening up in over thirty years, regardless of political, military, economic or cultural affairs. Thanks to such an extraordinary status, China needs to be more active in communication among the international community, showing our features to the world positively as far as possible. It is a fact that China is an old country with a long history and a magnificent culture so that it is necessary to further promote traditional Chinese culture to let more countries and more people know China well. As far as the author is concerned, analyzing and translating numeral-based Chinese proverbs and sayings seem to be a good choice at the present moment. Chinese proverbs and sayings are the treasures of national culture and they well reflect the characteristics of the Chinese culture, of course including numeral-based ones.
