Abstract:
Culture-loaded words are the cultural vocabulary which can best embody the culture information and reflect the social life in the language system. The paper takes the classic poem The Song of Burying Flowers as a case, for it is rich in culture-loaded words. Such words demonstrate Daiyu’s spiritual world under the cruel reality, while they also bring, to a certain degree, difficulties to translation. Therefore, it is essential to translate these words successfully. In this paper, two translations of Yang Hsien-yi and Hawks will be analyzed from the perspective of domestication and foreignization. By comparison, it is found that domestication is adopted by Hawks, which makes readers feel the feelings of the original readers as far as possible, while foreignization is adopted by Yang Hsien-yi, which is faithful to the original article and respect the original Chinese culture. In contrast, Yang Hsine-yi’s translation is closer to the oringinal, while Hawkes’s is westernized to a certain extent.
