Abstract
Hong Lou Meng, which is featured as one of the four great classics in Chinese literature, is a reflection of the encyclopedia of China’s feudal society, culture, history and life and has been translated into many versions in recent years. The important roles which are played by the translation of Hong Lou Meng are promoting foreign cultural exchanges,, introducing China’s classical heritage, and studying the translator’s subjectivity. By comparing two English visions of Hong Lou Meng which are translated by Yang Hsien-yi and David Hawkes, this paper is studied to indicate translator’s an increasingly important role reflected in two aspects, where the factors of translator’s subjectivity play an essential function and the translator’s subjectivity can also consciously react to external factors.
