Abstract
Pride and Prejudice is the most representative work of British novelist Jane Austen. It is also the most popular work of Austen for its complex plots, dramatic stories and beautiful smart language. And irony, as a writing technique, is the essence of artistic value in Pride and Prejudice. It makes the characters more vivid and the story more interesting. A translator should be able to distinguish it in the original texts and then convey it in the translated works, so that readers could fully appreciate it. This paper will focus on the use of irony in Pride and Prejudice and the translations of it in two Chinese translation versions of this novel. The author will analyze it by combining its writing background and some related theories of irony to find out the traits and defects of these two translations. The aim of this paper is that, by doing this research, translators can make greater efforts to understand irony in novels while translating and thus improve the quality of the translation versions, making them accurately represent the charm of the original texts and interest more readers.
