Abstract
Euphemism exists in our daily life and communication, which plays a pivotal role in coordinating the interpersonal relationship. Because language is the carrier and reflector of culture, euphemisms in different cultures may have different characteristics of the culture. There existing some similarities and differences in the history, social systems, values, customs and living styles of different nations, which can be reflected by euphemism in some degree. The author chooses euphemisms in Pride and Prejudice as the subject and classifies them into five groups according to type, endeavors to analysis culture differences between English euphemism and Chinese euphemism, and tries to draw the conclusion that cultural background plays a decisive role in the origination and development of euphemism. After comparing Pride and Prejudice with its Chinese version, the author finds that differences between Chinese euphemisms and English euphemisms are caused by four factors: social values, religions, social development processes and social structures; similarities between Chinese euphemisms and English Euphemisms are caused by two factors: human being’s common characters and taboos.

委婉语是普遍存在于人们日常交际中的一种语言，是协调人际关系时使用的一种重要语言交际手段。因为语言是文化的载体，不同的文化背景使英汉委婉语带有各自的鲜明特征。各民族在历史，社会制度，价值观念，风俗习惯，生活方式等方面有着相同之处与不同之处。这些文化异同在委婉语上都能得到一定程度上的反映。本文选取《傲慢与偏见》中的委婉语作为具体研究对象，将其分为五类，并从文化翻译观的角度出发，分析委婉语在英汉两种语境下的差别以及产生差别的文化原因；试图得出文化背景决定了委婉语生成和发展的结论。对比《傲慢与偏见》的原著和其中文译本后，作者发现其委婉语的不同主要基于以下四个方面的差异：社会价值观，宗教信仰，社会发展过程和社会组成结构；而相同点主要受到以下两个方面的影响：人类共性和禁忌。
