Usage of Domesticating and Foreignizing Strategies in maintaining the Translation of Prose Style
-taking Selected Chinese Modren Essays by Zhang Peiji as example
Abstract
The right usage of domesticating and foreignizing strategies in the translation activities is helpful to a better comunication. There is a key principle. When the domesticating strategy is used, it shoud not make the target reader to feel the cultural characteristics of the source language in the target language. When the foreinizing strategy is used, it can not just want to only to retain the original information and style and depart the audience, regardless of whether the target reader understand the source culture. In order to be faithful to the original and, as far as possible, to fulfill translation’s cross-cultural communication role, the traslator needs to combine the two strategies in the translation.
In this paper, Selected Modern Chinese Essays by Zhang Peiji act as materials. The research methods are based on the theory of domesticating and foreignizing strategies. The theory of prose style is as reference. It dedicates to research the strategy in maintaining style of prose. This paper first describes the theory and technique of the domesticating and foreignizing strategies, followed by a brief introduction to the meaning of the literary work style and its influencing factors. Then, a depth discussion on the translatability of prose style takes some typical expressions in Selected Modern Chinese Essays for example to point out that the flexible applications and the significant role of the two stategies in maintaining prose style. Finally, conclusions on how to retain the original style, transit information of the article and reflect Chinese literary language features more accurately will be stated.
The paper is not only a necessary supplement to the usage of domesticating and foreignizing strategies in maintaining the prose style, but also provides a reference for a further research in the tanslation of literary works.
