摘要

    本篇论文旨在从尤金•奈达的功能对等理论角度出发，以张培基教授的英译本《故都的秋》为研究对象，阐明该理论在散文翻译中的适用性和可行性。本文从意义和文体风格两个层次上研究所选散文的译文在奈达的功能对等理论指导下是否是成功翻译的。通过实例论证，本作者得出奈达的功能对等理论适用于散文翻译，从而体现出该理论对散文翻译实践的指导意义。本论文对人们今后从事散文翻译实践具有一定的借鉴价值，为他们提供一种新思路。

Abstract

The intention of this paper is to give convincing proofs of the feasibility and applicability of functional equivalence in the prose translation based on the English version of “Autumn in Peiping” by Professor Zhang Peiji. This paper studies whether the prose is successfully translated under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory in terms of two levels of the meaning and literary style. Demonstrated by examples, it concludes that Nida’s functional equivalence theory is applicable to prose translation, which, therefore, embodies a guiding significance in terms of the theory in the practice of prose translation. This provides a certain reference value and a new method for people engaged in the practice of prose translation in future.

1．Introduction
In human history, large quantities of literary writers have created numerous outstanding prose works in our country. Many translators and scholars also have translated a number of excellent works in the meantime, which shows that the translation cause of China has made tremendous progress and the study on translation has achieved a significant development. However, with the rapid development of modern society, the research on prose translation has far lagged behind the creation of the prose of its own. At present, the studies on prose translation are chiefly found in critical and descriptive articles and the theoretical research is still rare . Ma Liang put forward that the reconstruction of artistic conception is one of the important factors during the prose translation which can be conducted as a criterion of criticizing prose translation. When translating a prose, we should pay attention to two stages from interpretation and expression of artistic conception reconstructing. Besides, style vitally embodies the artistic vitality of a prose. It is the key point whether the original style is reproduced as far as possible. Zheng Xinning pointed out that the version would become a work of art if a pretty and intelligent original version is delivered. Stressing the transmission of rhyme and phonology is the kernel to make a translation a work of art. According to the above situations, the paper aims at exhibiting the feasibility and applicability of functional equivalence in prose translation by taking the English version of Professor Zhang Peiji’s “Autumn in Peiping” as an example. It will not only be beneficial to deepen people’s understanding of functional equivalence theory but also offer a helpful guidance for people in translating prose works and encourage more people to plunge into the research of prose translation.
