Strongly-motivated students will study English with explicit purpose and positive attitude and achieve a good result. On the contrary, lack of motivation of learning English will lead to a worse result. So, what motivation do non-English majors have in English learning? What is the relationship between motivation factors and English achievement? What are the differences of motivation between successful learners and unsuccessful learners? With these questions, the author conducted the research. The whole thesis is divided into five parts. Chapter one is an introduction. Chapter two presents the definition of motivation, types of motivation and comparison among different motivations. Chapter three is a case study based on the questionnaire. 1 Introduction
With the development of society, English has become a widely-accepted language all around the world. In China, students are required to learn English from primary school. However, studies and statistics show that in China today, some college students, especially non-English majors, are not interested in English and their learning results are of course not satisfying. What leads to these phenomena? The answer is that many students lack learning motivation while learning English. According to the theory of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), motivation determines the degree of effort learners put into foreign or second language learning. The more motivation they have, the more effort they tend to put into learning the language. And motivation has always been considered one of the most important factors in the second language learning. This paper aims at analyzing the learning motivations of non-English majors. Then, some suggestions for promoting the motivation will be provided.
