Abstract:
As one of the factors that affect the communicative competence of college students, avoidance phenomenon plays an important part in the process of their communication in English.
The thesis aims to make a brief study of the avoidance phenomenon in these students’ linguistic output. Avoidance is a kind of circuitous way that the learners use when they are not sure about a certain sound or a word or pattern or when they come across some difficulties. At least two possible factors can account for the generation of avoidance phenomenon. One is students’ limited language ability and the other has much to do with the psychological factors involved in the process of communication.
According to the analysis and study of the data, the avoidance phenomenon is classified into three kinds: vocabulary, structure and topic. The author also finds out that the lack of vocabulary and other language knowledge is the main reason that causes avoidance phenomenon. Of course, some other factors cannot be neglected, such as negative influences of non-intellectual factors and native language, the lack of input and output materials, etc.
Based on the studies mentioned above, the author finally puts forward her constructive suggestions for improving English teaching in colleges. They include enlarging language input, emphasizing language output, developing excellent psychological quality, training, active communicative strategy, making reasonable error-correction, introducing more cultural learning and reducing the interference of native language and so on.

摘要:
影响学生英语交际的因素很多,回避现象是十分重要的因素之一。本文对学生英语输出中的回避现象进行了较为深入的研究。
本文对外语学习中的回避概念作了简要分析。回避是学习者对某个音或某个词或某个句型等不清楚或感到困难时所采取的一种迂回手段。从根本上说,回避现象产生的原因有两种可能:一是学生的语言水平有限,不得己而求其次;二是学生语言水平能够保证进行思想表达的需要,但由于心理上的原因,学生选择避繁就简、避难就易的表达方式。
研究发现,学生的回避现象具体表现在词汇、语法、话题等方面。除此之外,非智力因素,母语影响及语言输出机会少等因素的影响也不容忽视。在分析回避现象的过程中,作者得到了一些有益的教学启示。
综上,本文提出了扩大语言输入、强化语言输出、培养学生良好的心理品质、构建积极的交际策略、进行合理的纠错以及加大文化的导入和减少母语干扰等方面的建议,希望能给广大大学英语学习者提供一条提高学习效率、减少语言回避现象的新思路。

1 Introduction
Avoidance strategy is actually a communication strategy, which has both positive effects and negative effects. On the positive side, it enables a smooth communication to help students to achieve all or part of the communicative purposes. On the other hand, from the negative side, students who fail to use the proper expression when they avoid difficulties, give up some of the communicative purposes, and thus did not expand and improve the language in communication.
