Abstract:
Learners’ autonomous learning serves both as the means and end of EFL. However, teachers’ involvement is both necessary and significant to guarantee and enhance learner autonomy. This paper firstly elaborates on two ways of teachers’ involvement: active direction and prohibitive intervention. Then, from theoretical perspectives and learners’ demand, this paper discusses the significance of teachers’ involvement in directing and promoting learner autonomy. Active direction stresses that teachers provide assistance for learners by taking the initiative in teaching and teachers are supposed to give encouragement and reward guidance suggestion to learners according to their difficulties. Prohibitive intervention is a kind of negative involvement, which mainly refers to the teachers’ timely involvement in the form of specific intervention and prohibition to ward off the unnecessary losses when they found the students with serious problems in learning are bigoted in their opinions. Teachers’ reasonable involvement is essential for learners to turn the possibity of autonomy into the reality. Meanwhile, it is an important prerequisite for improving learners’ autonomous abilities.

摘 要:
学习者自主学习是大学英语教学的手段和目的。而教师的介入则是提高学习自主性必要且重要的前提条件。本文主要介绍了积极性的引导和禁令性的干预这两种介入方式,认为这两种都是促进学习者自主性的重要手段;并且从理论和学习者自主学习的实际需求,探讨了教师介入对引导学习者自主学习以及提高学习者自主能力的重要性。积极性引导强调教师要在教学中采取主动为学习者提供帮助,教师要针对学习者的困难给予鼓励和奖赏的指导性建议。禁令性干预是“消极”介入方式,主要是指在已发现学生确实存在严重的问题,而学习者却偏执己见的情况下,教师为了避免不必要的损失而适时介入,实施针对性的干预和制止。教师合理的介入是促使学习者自主的可能性向现实性转化的重要且必要的条件,是真正保障学习者自主学习并提高自主能力的重要前提。

1 Introduction
Researches about the importance of language learners’ autonomy can be found both home and abroad from theoretical and practical perspectives. For a definition of autonomy, we might quote Holec who describes it as the ability to take charge of one’s own learning. It has already reached a consensus in China that college English teaching reform should follow the people-oriented principles; teachers should become students’ helper, collaborators and supervisors. Highlighting learners’ autonomy and their dominant position in teaching encourages students to participate in the learning process actively. In order to develop learners’ truly effective autonomy, teachers are supposed to explore in the teaching practice: how to create the best environment for independent study by using various favorable factors and provide the conditions needed for self-learning; how to help learners use scientific and effective learning strategies, establish a correct attitude towards learning and foster a positive learning motivation and self-esteem.
