A Comparative Study of Chinese characters in Chinese and Korean
ABSTRACT
As China and South Korea are bordered geographically, they have been maintaining a close relationship. And also historically, South Korea has been much influenced by Chinese politics, economy, society, culture and so on. But most of all, an influx of Chinese characters into the Korean language, has great influence on the Korean culture.
Currently, trade exchanges between China and South Korea have become more active. Furthermore, in different fields of study, the numbers of people who want to learn the Chinese language have increased rapidly. As a comparative study of Chinese characters between the two countries, this paper will shed some light on how both countries can increase their mutual understanding.
This paper focuses on changes and characteristics of Chinese characters in both Chinese and Korean as well as finding their similarities and differences based on some case comparisons. Moreover, this paper looks into the influence of Chinese characters on Korea.
Chapter 1 looks into the purpose and scope of this research. Chapter 2 talks about changes and characteristics of Chinese characters in China and Korea. It compares and analyzes vocabularies of Chinese characters in Chinese and Korean based on examples in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 focuses on finding out the influence of Chinese characters on Korea. And lastly, Chapter 5 is the final conclusion of this research.
