Abstract:
Sapir–Whorf hypothesis thinks that language determines the thought, belief, and attitude, and also many other linguists give different opinions about Sapir–Whorf hypothesis. No matter what opinions, it is universally accepted that language has a great influence upon people's thought and culture. Hence, this paper, having made surveys of 30 English majors, analyses the relationships between thought and language, the influence of thoughts on the English-Chinese translation, and implications to improve students' translation ability.

1. Introduction
As Wang Chao and Zhou Kun says that there are around 5000 languages in use today, and that each is quite different from others. Differences are especially marked between languages of different families, e.g., between Indo-European languages such as English and Hindi and Ancient Greek, on one hand, and Sino-Tibetan languages such as Hopi and Chinese and Swahili, on the other.
Many thinkers have urged that large differences in language lead to large differences in experience and thought. They hold that each language embodies a worldview so that speakers of different languages think about the world in quite different ways. This view is sometimes called the Whorf-hypothesis or the Whorf-Sapir hypothesis. But questions about the extent and kind of impact that language has on thought are empirical ones that can only be settled by empirical investigation. But the label linguistic relativity, which is more common today, has the advantage that makes it easier to separate the hypothesis from the details of Whorf's views, which are an endless subject of exegetical dispute.
