Abstract:

This paper makes a discussion on the TPR games on the children’s English classroom. The paper consists of five parts. The first part gives a brief introduction to TPR games in Kid’s English teaching. The second part is the presentation of two teaching cases of TPR games in the children’s English classroom and analyzes the advantages and the possible problems which could occur in adopting TPR games for the children. The third part and the fourth part talk about how to implement the TPR game effectively and what requirements for the teacher are needed if they want to carry out TPR games successfully on the kid’s English class. The last part is the conclusion of the paper, which restates the importance of TPR games in kid’s English teaching and suggests ‘i+1” game design when the TPR games are used in English teaching.

摘  要: 

论文主要探讨了儿童英语教学中TPR游戏教学法的有效应用。该论文由五个部分构成。第一部分主要介绍了该篇论文的主要观点和内容,同时对TPR游戏英语教学法的背景做了简单陈述。第二部分主要展示了TPR游戏教学法的两个教学案例并对TPR游戏法在这两个教学案例中所显示的优点和出现的问题及虽没有出现但有可能出现的问题进行了一定分析。第三部分和第四部分主要论述成功操作TPR游戏法英语教学的主要原则和对老师专业水平和文艺造诣的要求。最后一部分是对文章的总结,重申了TPR游戏教学法在儿童英语教学中的重要性并提出了在设计TPR教学游戏时应采取克拉申的“i+1”原则。

1 Introduction  
TPR is the initials of Total Physical Response, which is one of the direct communication teaching methods. This method was proposed by the American psychologist James Asher. It is a completely physiological reaction theory. Its theory basis is illustrated as follows.
When people learn language in early childhood, listening and speaking can promote the language ability. Through the listening and speaking the obtained information will have a quantitative change to qualitative change; the children will use the language to express their meaning naturally (James J. Asher,1969).
TPR teaching method was first used in the United States in the early 1960s. It indicates that people, especially the children, can learn the second language just as they learn their mother tongue. Since childhood is the most important stage during the whole language teaching process, the teachers must highlight the “listening” ability during that time. In the TPR games teaching, the teachers use the target language to make an instruction or set an example, and then ask students to do the response or imitate the action.
