Abstract:

This thesis aims to expound how to enhance teaching efficiency of oral class for    English majors by means of applying American TV series to the oral English teaching process. Traditional oral class has achieved a little in improving speaking skills of English majors while the existing problems in it also make the course futile and redundant. This thesis analyzes those problems and put forward possible countermeasures in allusion to each problem. Furthermore, this thesis discusses the effects of American TV series on oral teaching and the application of American TV series to the oral class. The writer hopes to intensify students’ desire for practicing oral English and arouse their interest in English.

摘要：

本文旨在阐释如何将美剧运用到英语专业口语教学课堂中以达到提高教学效率的目的。传统的口语教学在改善学生口语能力方面成效甚微，其中存在的问题更使口语课成为一个无用又赘余的摆设。本文将依次分析口语教学的现存问题，并针对每一个问题提出可能的解决办法。另外，本文将讨论美剧对于口语教学的作用，并且细述如何将美剧运用到口语课堂中。笔者希望通过这样的方式，能激发学生的口语学习热情，并增强他们对英语学习的兴趣。

1. Introduction
American TV series have gained tremendous popularity in China since The Man from Atlantis was introduced to China in 1980---the very first time that Chinese audience was exposed to a brand-new world. With the rapid development of scientific technology and the expansion of Internet, as well as computers in 21st century, an increasing number of people are getting access to rich resources of American TV series. There is no exaggeration to say that American TV series have made unprecedented achievement in China during the last 33 years. Nowadays, various types of American TV series provide audience with abundant choices, such as situation comedy (sitcom), romantic drama, science-fiction show and action-adventure show, etc. Especially for English majors, American TV series have gradually became a necessity in their spare time. From the writer’s perspective, American TV series are not only a kind of entertainment, but also an effective way to improve oral English.
