Abstract:
ESP (English for Specific Purposes) has become more and more important due to its practicality and specialty, and many college English teachers have started to seek a new way for ESP teaching. However, the biggest obstacle for people to learn ESP is vocabulary. Therefore it is vital for teachers to help their students choose an effective vocabulary learning mode. This paper, based on the Depths of Processing Theory and the Lexical Chunk Approach, will analyze the features of the ESP vocabulary for non-English majors in the college and illustrate the ways of training students’ vocabulary learning strategies in this regard. Besides, some suggestions for the integration of the vocabulary teaching theory with the practice of teaching ESP vocabulary are proposed accordingly. It is concluded that ESP vocabulary teaching plays an important role in ESP teaching and that to effectively train students’ vocabulary learning strategies is more important than to simply teach students the new words appearing in the text.

1. Introduction
ESP (English for Specific Purposes) generally refers to the teaching of English for a clearly practical purpose, and it is based on a rigorous needs analysis of learners. ESP came into being in the 1960s as a result of the unprecedented expansion of economy after the Second World War. The concept of ESP was first brought forward by Halliday in his book The Linguistic Sciences and Language Teaching (Halliday, 1964). He defines ESP as English for civil servants, for policemen, for officials of the law, for dispensers and nurses, for specialists in agriculture, for engineers and fitters.
