Abstract: With the development of our society, the communication between China and other countries is on the rise. As a bridge, English plays an irreplaceable role in the communication which arouses lots of discussions and studies on how to teach English effectively. Generally speaking, two strategies prevail in teaching period, one is teacher-dominating and another is student-centered. The question discussed in this paper is that who is centered in English classroom teaching.Traditional English learning is teacher-dominating. However, with the rapid step of modern society, this approach is out of date. The paper is aimed at revealing the disadvantages of the traditional English class learning and standing in a new perspective to balance relations between teachers and students. The paper also pays more attention to student’s role in English classroom teaching. How to define the role of students and teachers will be mentioned in this paper. The theoretical basis for student-centered classroom teaching is humanism and constructivism which mainly place great concerns on the student’s need and cultivate their enthusiasm in English classroom learning.

摘 要: 随着社会的发展,中外交流日益频繁。作为交流的桥梁,英语有着必不可少的作用也因此引起了许多关于怎样有效学习英语的讨论与研究。一般来讲,比较常见的教学模式有两种,一种倡导教师主宰另一种则以学生为中心。本篇论文讨论的是英语课堂教学的中心问题。传统的教学模式是教师主宰,可是随着现代社会的快速发展,这种模式已经落后于时代的步伐。本篇论文旨在揭露传统英语课堂教学的弊端以及站在一个新的角度上平衡教师与学生的关系。同时本篇论文关注英语课堂中学生角色问题。如何平衡教师与学生的角色问题将在本篇论文中提到。“学生中心”教学法理论依据是关注学生的需求以及注重激发学生学习热情的人文主义与建构主义。

As an important part of education, English teaching has been emphasized more than ever before alone with people in growing number who begin to learn English. In order to improve the quality of education, numerous people, including experienced experts and teachers endeavored to study new and effective strategies in the teaching. The link between language teaching and learning is obvious. Unlike other courses, English has its special traits which need special strategy because our mother tongue is not English and studying English is in Chinese atmosphere. Moreover, the so-called “dummy English learners” cannot meet the requirements of rapid development of modern society. To make matters worse, the increasing number of students in college English classroom set a big obstacle for English teaching. Educational goals for English teaching should focus on student’s abilities to learn independently and create appropriate learning environments in which our teachers cannot use the same method to teach English.
