Abstract
The significance of cross-linguistic influence has long been a controversial topic. This theory claims that learners’ native language would have a positive or negative impact on the second language acquisition. Although it would be too much to hope that this article will cause such a long-standing controversy, the discussion here may help to set to rest some dubious claims and to point the way toward the overlooked positive transfer from native language to the second language. Some useful suggestions are introduced on how the positive transfer facilitates practical English teaching process.

外语习得中,母语对学习者的影响是一个普遍存在的现象,已引起了学术界越来越广泛的关注和重视。 这种现象在心理学上被称为“母语迁移”现象。根据“母语迁移”理论,在第二语言的习得过程中,学习者的第一语言即母语的使用习惯会直接影响第二语言的习得,并对其起到积极促进或消极干扰的作用。根据教育心理学的原理,母语由于其与外语的相似成分而对外语习得产生的有益的、积极的影响叫做正迁移,它能促进学习者对外语的掌握与运用;反之,母语由于其与外语的相异成分而对外语习得产生的不利的、消极的影响叫做负迁移,是学习者掌握和运用外语的障碍。在习得过程中,正、负迁移同时存在并共同作用于外语习得。汉语无论是从发音、结构还是文字体系、书写方式上来说都与世界上绝大多数拼音文字的语言迥然不同,而且作为有着五千年历史沉淀的汉语,其文化内涵、思维模式、风土人情等都与印欧语系有着天壤之别。若中国人与欧美人同学一种西方语言,无疑,对中国人要困难得多,其母语的负迁移也大得多。本文将从语言学和语用学的角度作出可能的解答。

In the foreign language teaching field, it has already been respected that we should spare no efforts excluding the impact of the mother tongue (here mainly refers to Chinese) and cultivate a pure environment of the English way of speaking instead. As the increasing number of foreign scholars and linguists’ further research on the positive influence of first language, Chinese linguists and experts began to show tremendous interests towards the role that Chinese plays in learning a second language (English) in 1980s.
