Abstract
Punning is an important linguistic phenomenon manifested in many forms such as riddle, humor, commercial ads, and literature works. Some people take granted that Chinese “shuangguan” is equal to English “pun” as many dictionaries say so.
But if we make a comparison between them in normal examples, we may easily find their difference in use, thereby wonder what their real relationship is. Moreover, punning brings complicated problems in translation, and its ambiguous feature will trigger a heated debate.
Pun is an important classification in English rhetoric devices and Chinese ones, meanwhile, it is controversial. I am going to analyze the similarities and differences on the base of studying how it came into being and the forms. And by taking examples of the typical sentences and funny stories, we can find the contrastive aspects in sounds, forms, and meanings. My thesis is going to explain the similarity and dissimilarity of Chinese “shuangguan” and English “pun” through contrastive study, and analyze the reason that punning comes into being and the nature of punning. In addition, classification will be put forward. And the thesis will give a conclusion of the result of the study in the final part.
My thesis is going to be divided into six part. The first part will give out the brief introduction, then the second part will mainly focus on the definition and classifications, the third part is trying to introduce you the development history of pun, later in the next part, the application part of pun will be talked about. The fifth part comes to the untranslatability and ambiguity in translation part, the last part, a final conclusion will be put forward.
