A Comparison between the Iconoclasm of Wang Shuo and Jack Kerouac
Abstract
Jack Kerouac (hereinafter referred to as Kerouac), an American writer of 1950s, who belongs to the Beat Generation, is considered a literary iconoclast; Wang Shuo (hereinafter referred to as Wang), a Chinese writer in 1990s, is also viewed as a cultural iconoclast. As the best-known representative of the Beat Generation, which started to be known and accepted since the first half of the 1950s in America and significantly influenced the development of the counterculture worldwide, Kerouac and his most famous work—On the Road have enjoyed a high reputation and spread a enormous influence around the world. Since the end of 1980s, Wang has been regarded as China’s Kerouac due to his works share some similarities with the works of Kerouac. Since then, the controversy about whether Wang is a pioneer Beat writer in China started and still go on today and there’s no unanimous definition yet.
So, employing the parallel study method, this thesis tries to make a comparison between Wang and Kerouac, analyze and clarify similarities and differences between these two writers, to provide evidences to prove that their iconoclasm is different in essence and Wang is not a Chinese Beat writer. Based on the preceding research, it will help us to understand the essence of Wang and Kerouac’s works, and the essential differences of their iconoclasms.
