Abstract:
Euphemism, as a common linguistic phenomenon in world culture, plays an indispensable role in every social class and field. Since now, scholars around world have preoccupied into the study of euphemism in many different aspects, such as the pragmatics, the communicative functions and so on. In 1975, Paul Grice delivered the concept of cooperative principle, and further classified it into four maxims—quantity maxim, quality maxim, relation maxim and manner maxim. After that, many scholars analyses on the four maxims. Among these people, Chinese scholar Ms.Liu Mingfang, in 2008, adopted this principle to euphemism, and gave a detail description of euphemism based on this principle. On reference to the above two scholars, the paper focuses on the study of cooperative principle of euphemism in business English. The paper analyses with reasonable examples the four euphemistic maxims on business English. Besides, the paper doesn’t ignore the communicative function of business euphemism. To show the irreplaceable role of euphemism in business English, convincible examples are set on the study of euphemism in business English. At last, the paper analyses the limitation of euphemism in business English.

摘 要:
委婉语作为世界文化中的一种普遍现象,在每个社会阶层和领域中都是不可或缺的。到目前为止,已经有很多的国美外学者从各个不同的方面对委婉语进行研究,比如说语用学方面,社交功能方面等等不计其数。1975年,著名的语言学家格赖斯第一次提出了合作原则这一概念,并将其尽心了进一步的分析,把它分解为四项准则。它们分别是数量准则,质量准则,关联准则和方式准则。此后,很多学者在之一原则基础上做了大量的研究,其中2008年,中国学者刘明芳将之和委婉语联系起来,并针对这四个准则将委婉语进行了具体的分析。本篇论文借鉴前人的研究成果,讨论了委婉语的合作原则特点在商务英语中的应用,并运用例证具体分析了委婉式的合作原则在商务英语上的作用。以外,本文还在四项原则的基础上举例说明了委婉语在商务英语中的交际功能。最后,通过长期的学习研究总结了委婉语在商务英语中应用的局限性。

1 Introduction
Euphemism, as a common linguistic phenomenon, plays an indispensable role in every social class and field. Nowadays, with the development of economy, business, as a standard to measure the powerfulness of a country, is becoming increasingly important. Euphemism, as a very useful communicative phenomenon, has become a necessary method in the process of doing business. A business without euphemism is unimaginable. Euphemism is just like a lubrication, which makes the business go on smoothly. The paper will describe the use of euphemism in business English based on Grice’s cooperative principle, which is the aim and direction of successful communication.
