Abstract

English euphemism is an indispensable and natural part of English language. Many linguists and scholars have studied this linguistic phenomenon. Based on their achievements, the paper will have an exploration of English euphemisms from the pragmatic perspective.
Euphemisms are rich and diversified, which can reflect the characteristics and laws of a language. The existence of the English euphemism should abide by certain principles of the language, whereas their use depends largely on a context and has a great effect on daily communication.
The euphemism occurs when there is a violation of cooperation principle, which is closely connected with a context. And a context can influence the choice and interpretation of the euphemism. The highest criterion of communication is exact and tactful. So language strategies must be carried out in communication. And the use of the euphemism is one of effective methods indeed.
English euphemism is widely used in communication, and it has great influences on communication. So for English learners, it is quite important to use English euphemism effectively in English communication.

摘  要

    英语委婉语是英语词汇中不可分割的一部分。多年来许多语言学家和学者分别从不同角度对这一预言现象进行研究。本文借鉴他们的研究成果从语用学角度探讨委婉语和合作原则的关系。
委婉语的内容丰富，能从多方面反映一种语言的特征和规律，委婉语的产生离不开语言本身的内在规律，并在很大程度上取决于语言在语境中的使用情况。委婉语违背合作原则各准则而产生，其选择和理解都依赖于语境。言语交际的最高标准是准确得体，因此交际语就必须讲究言语策略，使用委婉语是行之有效的方法之一。
英语委婉语在日常交际中使用频率非常高，对交际效果影响也很大。因此，对于英语学习者来说，如何有效地使用英语委婉语在英语交际中显得尤为重要。
