Abstract and Key Words

Abstract :In the theory of Conversational Implicature, Grice raised Cooperative Principles. But in business activities, which the speakers in a conversation are supposed to observe to achieve good effects of communication. There are some phenomena, in which the speakers in a conversation deliberately violate Cooperative Principles. The present study analyzes these penomena by lots of examples, points out that the wide adoption of euphemism features these penomena. Finally, the author tentatively puts forward his advice that to improve communication in business activities, understanding and applying Cooperative Principles flexibly is a very effective way. Meanwhile, mastering some pragmatics strategies is equally important.

摘　要:在会话含义理论中，格赖斯的“会话合作原则”表明，谈话双方为了顺利交际,常需要遵循一些双方都默认的会话原则，但商务英语会话中常会出现违反“合作原则”的现象。本研究具体分析与这些原则相违背的常见现象，体现了婉语的作用。最后提出理解和合理运用会话合作原则，同时恰当掌握和使用语用策略是提高商务交际能力的有效途径。

1. Introduction
Euphemism is a common language phenomenon in human community. It has been playing a very important part of “lubrication” in communication since it was born. Hence the verbal communication is one of the major means of maintaining social and interpersonal relations, people will avoid using the words that can cause misunderstanding which will be harmful to the mutual relations. So they will express their ideas, exchange information indirectly, using “euphemism” is one of the methods.
    In the theory of conversational implicature, Grice raised Cooperative Principles, but in business activities, there are some phenomena, in which the speakers in a connversation deliberately violate CP. In the process, euphemism plays an important role. 
In this thesis, the author intends to adopt the theory to make a study on the basis of the existing research achievements to analyze the relations between euphemism in Business English and Cooperative Principles from the perspective of pragmatics.
