1. Introduction
1.1 Preliminary
It is estimated that approximately 375 million people speak English as their first language. The large proportion of its native speakers is only outnumbered by Chinese and Spanish. Originated in British Isles, English starts to flourish with the rise of English Empire. As the Empire expanded, flexing its muscles around the globe, many areas like America, Australia, and India were colonized and English was passively accepted. If the spreading of English in the first stage was attributed to historical reasons, then the second stage is far more voluntary a process. After the Second World War, America outpaced England and rose to the superpower of the world. Its dominance in economy, science and technology, higher education and entertainment industry becomes the envy of the rest of the world. The fascination and charm of this West Pacific country thus make English learning trendy in countries like Korea, France, Japan, China and Sweden.
