Abstract

     Among the splendid British culture, the handsome British gentleman has become one symbol of Britain. This paper gives an analysis on the characteristics of English gentleman through Mr. Bean’s performance in films Mr. Bean’s Holiday and Mr. Bean’s Disaster. Based on Mr. Bean’s rich and funny body language and facial expressions, his clothing, habits, it analyzes the British gentleman culture origin and reveals its distinctive figures, in order to give people a deep understanding of British culture and act as a true gentleman in our daily life.

摘 要

人们一提到英国文化，浮现脑际的便是风度翩翩的英国绅士。可以说“绅士风度”已成为英国的品牌象征。本文主要通过脍炙人口的电影《憨豆先生大灾难》，《憨豆先生的黄金假期》中“憨豆先生”的形象,通过憨豆先生丰富的肢体语言和面部搞笑表情，憨豆的穿衣，生活习惯等深入分析英国绅士文化的表现，分析了绅士形象和特征及渊源,彰显出英国绅士文化的独特之处,让人们更好的了解英国绅士文化及如何真正做一名风度翩翩的绅士。

1.  Introduction
Hopkins, Frederick Rowland, one of the famous British poets in 19th century, once said, “Even if the British people would have nothing to leave for the world, the conception of gentleman will contribute a lot for the human beings”.It shows the tremendous influences of gentlemen culture on British people from generation to generation.
The word “gentleman” comes from the Latin “gentiles”, thus means literally “a man belongs to a family”, signifying a man’s identity. According to Oxford Dictionary (2001), the word “gentleman” has three meanings. The first meaning is man, the second is a man with good-education and personality, the third one is a man born with high nobility. Obviously, the gentleman refers to male primarily, and mostly are noble birth with good quality. It’s often said that “the English gentleman”is  the traditional gentleman come from the United Kingdom of England. However, as a defined concept of systems and behavior, the English gentleman has gone through a long process to absorb the essence of the culture in many European countries, including the virtue of ancient Greece and Rome, the knight spirit of medieval French and the royal culture of Italy and so on. Finally, it has gone through a lot evolution and development and formed a complete idea of gentleman culture in the United Kingdom.
