Abstract
Coffee is one of the three most widely consumed beverages (the other two are tea and coke). In 1970s and 1980s, the policy of reform and opening-up accelerated the spread of coffee in China. Nestle, Starbucks and other food companies began to scramble for the Chinese market. Nowadays, cafés exist in every corner of a big city. Meanwhile, sales of instant coffee also increase. The number of coffee consumers increasingly mounts, especially among young people. People wonder why coffee is so popular. Of course, coffee’s natural taste and aroma contributes one factor. Those who consider drinking coffee a unique life style can not resist the particular delicious odor of freshly-made coffee. More people believe coffee makes them energetic and less depressed. When people have to finish an urgent task, they usually make a cup of Espresso or Moca to decompress or refresh themselves. There are also some who drink coffee while chatting with friends or carrying out business negotiation. The café is a very social place where people are free to exchange ideas and make new friends. However, researches show that over-consumption of coffee may do harm to people’s health. Compared with children and the old, young people are more tolerant to possible negative effects, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), osteoporosis and so on because of their better physical function.
