Abstract

    Alfred Hitchcock is an acknowledged suspense master and suspense is an important characteristic in his films. This thesis mainly elaborates on the suspense in Rebecca. The application and effect of suspense in Rebecca is analyzed in detail from the definition of suspense and Hitchcock's view of suspense to the content and techniques in Rebecca. From the content aspect, we find out the specific application of suspense from the plot, the characters and the environment. From the technique aspect, we find out the unique mysterious atmosphere built by virtual -actual combination, Hitchcock’s own MacGuffin element and black and white image. The suspense in Rebecca meets an aesthetic satisfaction of the audience and inspires a deeper thinking of life of the audience.

阿尔弗雷德•希区柯克是公认的悬念大师,悬念是希区柯克电影中的一个重要特色。本文主要对电影蝴蝶梦中的悬念进行了讨论。从悬念定义和希区柯克的悬念观着手，从电影的内容和表现技巧详细分析悬念在该电影中的运用及其作用。内容方面，通过对电影的情节，人物和环境的探讨，挖掘出悬念在这部电影中的具体体现。技巧方面，通过虚实结合，希区柯克导演特有的麦克格芬元素和黑白影像，营造出一种特有的诡异氛围。整个电影悬念的使用使观众在影像视听艺术世界之中获得娱乐性的审美满足感，同时也激发了观众对人生的进一步思考。

1. Introduction
1.1Survey of Film Rebecca
Rebecca is a film produced by Selznick in 1940. It was adapted from a best-selling mystery novel Rebecca written by a contemporary woman writer Daphne du Maurier. At the same time, Rebecca is also the most typical and representative one of Alfred Hitchcock’s early films and it brought a brighter future for Hitchcock's works. The atmosphere in the film is strangely fascinating and the skill of suspense is in good use for a psychological drama. In this film Hitchcock created a dark and depressing image of Manderley Manor: desolate buildings like ruins of castles, a dog in the open hall and the housekeeper haunting ghostly. All have become eternal memory in the film history.
